This wearable art project explores the intersection of geometry, nature, and fashion through the creation of a nautilus-inspired ear cuff. Using Bristol board as the primary material and folding and laser cutting techniques as the core construction method, the design draws from the mathematical elegance of the nautilus shell and the broader organic patterns of the marine world.

This work is both a sculptural fashion accessory and a reflection on the relationship between humans and the natural world, particularly endangered species like the nautilus.

Research

Art, Geometry and Fashion

  • Geometry allows designers to explore space, materiality and form to create innovative and beautiful work. Incorporating geometric principles into the design of wearable items can help establish order and achieve balance, thereby greatly enhancing the visual impact. The concept of combining art, geometry and fashion runs through many of Issey Miyake’s works. Miyake’s designs frequently incorporate folds, three-dimensional cutting, and pleats, making garments appear like wearable sculptures.
  • Fashion inspired by the natural world
  • Nature has been a source of inspiration for the fashion world for centuries. Designers have consistently drawn inspiration from the beauty, diversity and power of the natural world, incorporating elements such as flowers, feathers and animal prints into their work. This enduring fascination reflects humanity’s complex relationship with nature.
  • Nautilus
  • The nautilus is a mysterious and ancient marine creature, admired for its elegant spiral shell and the amazing thing is that he has 90 tentacles. The nautilus is often called a “living fossil” because its appearance has remained largely unchanged for over 500 million years. Its significance spans multiple fields, including science, mathematics, and art. However, due to human exploitation and environmental changes, its survival is increasingly threatened.

    Design Proposal

I plan to create a ear cuff inspired by the shape of the nautilus. I chose ear cuff because the spiral form of the nautilus have some similarities with the shape of the human ear. I will use folding techniques and repetitive construction of identical elements to create a geometric design that mimics the structure of the nautilus shell. The significance of this project lies in its aim to strengthen the connection between humans and nature while raising awareness about the importance of protecting endangered species and urging people to stop destroying natural ecosystems.
